Velden is one of the easier Alpine resorts to reach without a car. These are the routes, the seasons and the small practical points that make the first day smoother.

Getting there

By train

Velden am Wörthersee station is on the main line between Villach and Klagenfurt, a walk of a few minutes from the Corso. Regional trains stop several times an hour. From Graz, the Koralm railway has made Klagenfurt much closer; from Vienna, Salzburg and Munich, change in Villach or Klagenfurt. Some hotel packages include the rail ticket.

By air

Klagenfurt airport is about 25 km away, roughly half an hour by taxi or a little longer by bus and train via Klagenfurt station. Ljubljana in Slovenia is the next nearest airport, about an hour's drive through the Karawanken tunnel. Vienna, Munich and Venice have more routes but need a train connection of several hours.

By car

Velden has exits on the A2 Süd Autobahn between Villach and Klagenfurt. Austrian motorways need a vignette (toll sticker or digital vignette), and the Karawanken tunnel from Slovenia has its own toll. Ask the hotel about parking when you book: spaces in the town centre are limited in summer.

When to go

June: Water warm enough for most swimmers, long evenings, fewer people than in the school holidays.
July–August: Peak season. The warmest water, the busiest promenade and the most events; book early.
September: Often the best month: still warm, the lake is quiet and the light is soft.
October–December: Hiking and cycling weather, then the Advent market season on the lakefront.

Before you leave home

Confirm your room category and whether it faces the lake.
Reserve Die Yacht separately if dinner there is part of the plan.
Budget the tourist tax of €2.70 per person, paid locally.
Pack swimwear from June to mid-September and a light jacket for the evenings.
Buy a motorway vignette if you are driving.
Check the boat timetable for your dates, as some routes are seasonal.
